Hi, my name is Brandi and I’m an author.
I’m also a wife, mom, friend, daughter, sister, infertility warrior, fixer-upper inhabitant, small business owner, creator, encourager, reader, decorator, and a million other things that make me…me.
Trust me when I say that when anyone does anything (and I mean just about anything) to support my book and/or my writing career, an actual person (me) does a very excited and unversed dance. Because honestly? I don’t have time to write. I make time (usually, anyway) because it’s something I feel called to do. It’s not a job for me; it’s a passion.
I’ve always been an avid small shop supporter because I know first-hand the amount of effort that it takes to make a business successful, and now that I write books, I now know first-hand the amount of effort that it takes to make a book successful.
And let me tell you, it ain’t easy.
So, if you know an author personally, love an author that doesn’t know you exist, or know ME (hi, hello, hey), here are seven things you can do to support them (trust me: these go a lot farther than you think).
Buy their book.
Okay, duh, stating the obvious here. Buying an author’s book supports them financially, but it also tells them their time (weeks, months, years) was worth it because ding someone bought their book.
(You can buy mine HERE.)
Rate their book.
Did you know that one of the number one ways Amazon ranks a book is by the reviews it has? The fewer reviews a book has, the fewer brownie points Amazon gives it. Reviews cause Amazon to give a book a double take, and even put them on a bestselling list.
But don’t hang all your clothes to dry on Amazon! Other platforms, like Goodreads, also tally reviews. Goodreads is one of my favorite platforms because you’re able to connect with your friends solely about BOOKS. It’s one of the number one platforms that people find a new book to read (or author to love).
(Add me on Goodreads HERE! I love to connect with fellow readers!)
Tell your friends about their book.
When a friend comes up to you and says, “I’ve just read a book that I think you will love!”, how likely are you to read that book? I’m very likely to. Word-of-mouth is powerful in the world of books.
Request their book at the library.
Want to read the book but can’t financially do it right now? I totally get that. Do you and your author friend a favor by requesting the book at the library if it isn’t already there. Not only will you get to read it for free, but so will many others that happen upon it while scouring the library shelves.
Post on the book on social media and/or your blog.
There’s a reason being an “influencer” is a legitimate job right now - social media is a powerhouse for marketing and connecting with others. I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve connected with someone about my book or a fellow writer because someone posted about my book on their blog, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and/or Pinterest. One post can bring so much to an author.
Also, share their social media posts.
Did they post a giveaway? What about an excerpt from their book? Or a blog post about their book?
Share it! No one said you needed to come up with your own content to make a difference! Sharing posts is one of the number one ways social media users connect with each other - take advantage of it. :)
Reach out to the author and tell them you loved their book.
I also can’t tell you how many times I’ve been down because of book sales, stuck in a writer’s block, or questioning if I’m in the right career, and I’ve received a message or email from a reader about how much they loved my book. There is truly nothing like it, and your words are so influential!
Whatever you do to support an author, know that your efforts are 110% worth it. I promise. ;)
How have you supported an author that you love? I’d love to hear it in the comments!
