“Hadley’s best and worst trait is her strength. Think of it like a tunnel. When she’s going through that dark, cold, seemingly endless tunnel, she keeps walking, no matter how dark it gets. But when she finally gets to the end, where it’s bright again, instead of basking in the sudden sunlight, she turns back around and hides at the end of the tunnel. She can still see the sun, but she’s more comfortable in the dark because it’s where she spent years of her life. Does that make sense?” - One Step Forward
Hadley Lockett is the very definition of strength. Most of the time it aids her, but some of the time it blocks her path. She holds on to her strength like it's an addition of her body, like another arm or leg. It's all she's ever known.
She lost her father when she was a child before she got to know the man who loved her before birth. Despite the missing piece of her family, Hadley has never experienced a lack of love. Her mom is there even when Hadley doesn't ask her to be. She has a handful of close friends, ones that would do just about anything for her.
One of those friends is also Hadley's business partner. Molly and Hadley own H&M Home design, where they refurbish old and forgotten homes to their former glory. It's no secret Hadley dreams of owning one of those broken homes herself one day, but right now, that dream seems farther than her reach.
These sentences may lead you to believe that Hadley's life is borderline perfect. But rest assured, she has her secrets just like the rest of us. The secret she's holding, however, just might be the very thing that destroys her.
